World Citizen Challenge

March and April Reviews

April 8, 2009 · 13 Comments

Eek! I’ve become an awful challenge host. :/ Sorry about that. After my fibro being bad, I’m in the process of getting my life back in order, so there won’t be another mini-challenge until May.

However, here are the Mr. Linkys for March and April reviews; I’ll get the review directory updated soon. Thanks for your patience. :)

ETA: apparently you can only do one Mr. Linky a day. So the two I have linked are also the Library Loot one! I’ve put up a new one for March, and I’ll add April’s tomorrow. *sigh*

Review Directory Up and Running! (and an update Feb’s Mini-Challenge)

February 21, 2009 · 2 Comments

Whew-I added all of our reviews so far to the directory. We already have seventeen reviews guys! By far, the most popular categories right now are Worldwide Issues and History. The only category with no reviews is Economics, but I’ve read an economics selection, so I’ll try to get the review up soon. :) Right now, I have the directory organised by category, and then each review is kind of haphazardly listed. Do you think I should sort reviews within the categories? I was thinking either by title alphabetically or chronologically by when the review was published.

It’s getting towards the end of the month, and no one’s participated in this month’s mini-challenge. I’ve decided on the prize-I’ll mail you three current-edition periodicals of your choice. Since no one’s done it so far, you have a good chance of winning if you enter! Here are the rules, in case it’s slipped your mind.

February Reviews

February 18, 2009 · 7 Comments

Here’s the place to link your February reviews! Sorry I don’t have the January reviews up in the directory-I’ll work on that. :) And does anyone have an opinion on how I should post the reviews? By category? Blogger? Month? Title? Author? (see my problem?!)

Re: Thomas Friedman

Those of you who read my book blog probably realise that I loathe Friedman. To find out why, here’s a great post on Citizen Reader that discusses this awesome critique of his new book. (The critique contains swearing, fyi. Still awesome, though!)

Feburary Mini-Challenge: Periodicals

February 2, 2009 · 6 Comments

It’s time for the second mini-challenge of the year! This month, if you choose to participate, read an article from a newspaper, magazine, or journal and discuss it on your blog. The article should be something to do with ‘world citizenship,’ so just make sure it’s somethign international. If you don’t subscribe to any periodicals, many have free online viewing. And feel free to read in a foreign language if you can! I’ve included some magazine links, but it’s very America-centric, so feel free to suggest more in the comments and I’ll add them here. :)

Newsweek International
The Economist (my favourite!!)
Foreign Affairs
Foreign Policy
Time
U.S. News & World Report

Recommended by Dark Orpheus:
The Utne Reader
Mother Jones
Monocle

At the end of the month, I’ll do a drawing of all participants. I’m not sure what the prize will be yet, but I’ll let you know soon!

Draw for the January Challenge

February 2, 2009 · 2 Comments

Unfortunately, Amazon failed me and didn’t get the inflatable globe here. So instead this month’s winner will get two books from my giveaway pile and The Economist’s Facts and Figures 2008 (it’s a cute little mini world atlas).

And the winner (I totaled up everyone’s participation, then got a random number generated between 1 and 95) is Becca (lupingirl)! She played more than double as much as anyone else, so the odds were definitely in her favour.

Thanks to everyone who participated. :)

I know it’s still pretty early in the month, but if you’ve reviewed a book for the challenge during January, use this Mr. Linky to share it!

Over Fifty Participants!

January 5, 2009 · 12 Comments

I’m so excited guys. :) It seems like people are enjoying the first mini-challenge as well (although, that of course, is optional). Has anyone started their first book? I’ve put China: Fragile Superpower on hold, still waiting for it to arrive at my library branch though! If anyone has started a book, have you learned anything new or interesting or cool?

January Mini-Challenge: Geography!

January 1, 2009 · 27 Comments

Because it’s difficult to be world citizen without knowing the physical layout world. :)

This month’s mini-challenge is to play some of these world geography games. Then come back and tell me which ones you played and which level you got to. Don’t forget to take screen shots of your best scores and highest levels for bragging rights (on a PC, hit the button on your keyboard that says ‘PrtSc,’ then open Paint and click ‘Edit’ then ‘Paste’)! Each topic you play, and each level you get to, will give you one entry in the giveaway at the end of the month (so doing the first level of six regions gets you the same number of entries as getting to the sixth level of one region). The giveaway will be two books of your choice from my giveaway shelf (link to that coming soon-it’s a ton of books, so I promise there’ll be a big variety) and a cute 12″ blow-up globe.
